How it works
Word detection
Non-empty groups separated by whitespace are counted as words, which works consistently for typical articles, essays and messages.
Character counts
The tool shows every character including spaces, plus a second total with all whitespace removed.
Reading estimate
Estimated reading time uses a reference speed of 200 words per minute and rounds up to a complete minute.
Helpful answers
Frequently asked questions
Does Kitalva save the text I enter?
No. Counting happens locally in your browser and the text is not sent to a Kitalva server.
Do spaces count as characters?
The main character total includes spaces and line breaks. A separate count removes all whitespace.
How accurate is the reading time?
It is a simple estimate based on 200 words per minute. Actual speed depends on the reader and complexity of the text.
