The method

How it works

01

First discount

The original price is multiplied by the discount rate to find the first saving.

02

Extra discount

A second discount applies to the already-discounted price, not the original price. Two 20% discounts therefore equal a 36% effective discount, not 40%.

03

Final saving

The final price is subtracted from the original price to show exactly how much money stays in your pocket.

Frequently asked questions

How is a discount calculated?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage, divide by 100, then subtract that saving from the original price.

Do two discounts get added together?

No. Successive discounts apply one after the other. A second discount is calculated from the reduced price, so the effective rate is lower than simply adding both rates.

Does the calculator include VAT?

It treats the entered price as the starting price. If you need to add or remove VAT separately, use the related VAT Calculator.
